I'm honored to have received this award in the Midland Artists Guild annual juried show for "grandma's marbles".

I found this bag of marbles in a box of things in the basement. This and the various other toys remind me of the kinds of games we played as kids. All these marbles had names!

NEW STUDIO CLASSES

I'm happy to offer a new schedule of classes for 2012. Below are a description of the classes, a weekly schedule, pricing and my regular office hours. To sign up for a class, send an email (see right side bar) with your name, the class and time you'd like to attend, and the date you'd like to start. Also, you may stop by any time during the week to see the space, sign up for a class, and meet me!

DRAWING INSTRUCTION

Drawing classes start with basic perceptual and eye/hand coordination exercises, then advance to include understanding of the picture plane, negative space, shared edges, and the effects of light and shadow. Other practical aspects are covered, eg: how to sharpen and hold a pencil and how to maintain a posture and attitude for more effective drawing. Students with more advanced skills will be presented with appropriately challenging exercises.

OIL PAINTING INSTRUCTION

These classes concentrate on the basics: the properties of oil paint, pigment, color mixing, brushes, and canvas. Through small still-life exercises, you will learn of several different approaches to starting a painting. You will practice mixing paint, applying paint to canvas with different kinds of brushstrokes, and manipulating the paint on the canvas.

ANIMATION INSTRUCTION

This Saturday class provides you with the tools and concepts to make your own short animated movie. Through the course, you will get an overview of how an animated movie is made, using "hands on" media and computer graphic software to complete and view your final projects.

WALK - IN

These blocks of time accommodate those who may be seeking help with drawing or painting, or whose schedule does not permit commitment to a course. A still life is set up for you to work from independently, or with instruction, as needed. Beginning instruction is also provided.

Ashman Circle Sketches

These are small sketches of the Ashman Circle business district in Midland where I have my studio. Since my studio "Art of Priscilla" is the new kid on the block, I thought that a way of connecting to the area was to get out and paint! The Circle is an obsolete traffic configuration, but the businesses that were built around it still remain. My studio is the small brick building with the round (Circle!) window.

Another toy I found in a box of things in the basement. I have distinct memories discovering and "working" on this bench. It got a lot of use from me and five siblings!

I'm finally up and running in my new studio in Midland, MI. It's good to get painting again.

I grew up here in Midland and I found this bag of marbles and various other toys that remind me of childhood and the kinds of games we played. All these marbles had names!

This is from a few photos I took of this guy at the Bristol Renaissance Faire last summer. Lots of people were there in interesting costumes. Painting with photo reference is fun, but nothing beats being there!

I've been doing these small (6x6) oil gesture sketches to increase my fluency with the figure in action and with brush and paint. At about half an hour each, a fun challenge!

I spent the weekend at the Bristol Renaissance Faire, challenging myself to capture musicians in motion on the spot. These, along with the work of fellow artists, were auctioned off at the fair to raise funds for a Wisconsin children's charity.

I had a wonderful afternoon yesterday painting flowers in front of Marion Street Gallery. When the band "Picante" set up in a nearby storefront, I abandoned my flowers and painted them while they played.

I just finished this small study of Isabella, a gray and white Great Pyrenees. It was a challenge because I decided to do it all with five values (including the gray paper, black and white) of pre-mixed ink with brush - so no mixing or building up of ink to adjust values, and no fixing mistakes, either!
